Herbert Huncke was the original, real-life inspiration to many of the early Beats. He’s known to have first coined the term. Characters based on him have appeared in volumes by the likes of Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs. They were each fascinated by his street-smart attitude and underworld lingo. In 1996, Francois Bernadi caught up with him at the Chelsea Hotel and the resulting documentary is marvelous. It is simply a pleasure to hear these two greats in conversation, recounting stories of their wild days getting lit up, burnt out and generally living on the very edge in 1950’s New York. Part delinquent, part intellectual, with that unforgettable face, it could only be Huncke, the man, the legend, the theory.
